Spearfish requires a city contractor license

Unlike most towns around Rapid City, Spearfish allows only City of Spearfish licensed contractors to work inside city limits. Owner-occupants doing their own work are the exception. Licenses are checked when permits are issued and at inspection, through Building Services at 625 N. 5th St.

So add one item to the usual list. Ask each installer for:

  • a current City of Spearfish contractor license
  • an SD contractor's excise tax license number (verify with the Department of Revenue at 1-800-829-9188)
  • proof of insurance
  • EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm status if the home was built before 1978

Rapid City Window Pros doesn't verify any of these. Companies based in Rapid City, about 42 miles southeast in a straight line, may or may not hold a Spearfish license.

Black fiberglass windows on a newer Black Hills home

Two minutes, 49 degrees

At 7:30 a.m. on January 22, 1943, Spearfish sat at −4°F. Two minutes later it was 45°F. A chinook wind had poured down off the Hills, and later that morning the town dropped from 54°F back to −4°F in 27 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

Few days are that extreme, but warm-cold swings like that are a regular part of winter here. Each swing makes frames expand and contract and puts stress on corner joints and the seals in insulated glass. That is why some installers recommend lower-expansion frames such as fiberglass for the Northern Hills, and why careful installation and sealing matter as much as the product.

A growing college town

Spearfish had an estimated 14,154 residents in July 2025, up 15.9% from 2020, which makes it the largest town on this site outside Rapid City. Much of the housing is recent: the median home was built in 1992, with 19% from the 2010s and 18% from the 2000s. About a third (34.4%) predates 1980. Fewer than half of homes (49.6%) are owner-occupied, which fits a town with a university, Black Hills State.

For owners, the result is a mixed list of jobs: early seal failures in 2000s houses, first-generation vinyl in 1990s houses, and lead-safe projects in the older streets. Lawrence County sits in IECC climate Zone 6A like the rest of the region, so the glass package deserves as much attention as the frame.

Hail in the Northern Hills

A June 2020 Black Hills Pioneer headline reported hail that “pummels roofs, windows in Spearfish.” We have only the headline, not the details, but it is a reminder that hail reaches this end of the Hills as well. After a storm, take photos, call your agent and read your deductible. Be wary of out-of-town crews pushing a same-day signature. Our hail damage guide walks through the steps.

Prices follow the same published ranges as the rest of the area. See the cost guide for the full table.

Spearfish window FAQ

Does a window installer need a Spearfish city license?

Yes. Only City of Spearfish licensed contractors may work inside city limits, with an exception for owner-occupants doing their own work. The city checks licenses at permit and inspection. Ask any company quoting your job for its Spearfish license, plus its SD contractor's excise tax license number and proof of insurance.

Is fiberglass better than vinyl for Spearfish winters?

Fiberglass expands and contracts less than vinyl as temperatures change, which some installers favor for a town known for fast chinook swings. Vinyl costs less and works well when it is installed properly. Fixr's January 2026 unit ranges are $350 to $800 for vinyl and $400 to $1,500 for fiberglass. Ask installers to quote both.

I rent in Spearfish. Can I request window quotes?

Only the property owner can approve and pay for replacement windows, so the request should come from them or their manager. As a tenant you can still report a cracked pane, a window that won't lock or a failed seal to your landlord in writing. If the owner wants quotes, they can submit the request here.
